PSL bets bag Most Outstanding Swimmer plums in Phuket tilt

Philippine Swimming League (PSL) standouts Kyla Soguilon and Aubrey Tom bagged the Most Outstanding Swimmer awards in their respective age groups at the close of the 2015 Phuket International Swimming Championship held at the Thanyapura Sports and Leisure Center in Thailand.

Soguilon, a pride of Aklan, swept all her seven events in the girls’ 10 years – 50-meter butterfly, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, 50m backstroke and Open Water 200m freestyle.

The seven-year-old Tom also made huge waves by going seven-of-seven in the girls’ 8-under. She ruled the 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke and Open Water 100m freestyle events.

The PSL has surpassed the 10-gold medal prediction of PSL President Susan Papa earlier.

“We’re happy that we were able to surpass our medal target. These kids are the future of Philippine swimming. They already embraced the spirit of representing and giving honors to our country,” said Papa.

“We won’t stop guiding these kids as well as the other kids joining our competitions. It’s our goal to develop and transform them to be a champion. We are also molding them to become a role model with good attitude. Self-discipline, good character and determination are some of the factors in creating a true champion,” Papa stressed.

Soguilon along with Papa and PSL Secretary General Maria Susan Benasa will be flying to Perth, Australia to join nine other swimmers who will be seeing action in the prestigious 2015 Indian Ocean All-Star Challenge scheduled on April 1 to 8.

The other Perth delegates – Male Swimmer of the Year Sean Terence Zamora, Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh, Drew Benett Magbag, Martin Jacob Pupos, Stephen Guzman, Rio Lorenzo Malapitan, Julian Pupos, Aalia Jaire Espejo and Paul Christian Cusing – are scheduled to leave on Wednesday.

The PSL is the national sports swimming association for universities and colleges accredited by the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines —an internationally affiliated member of Federation of International Sports University (FISU).
